Mastering the Return: Teacher’s Insights and Strategies After a School Leave

Here I come…back from a leave and ready to kickstart the year!

As the summer days wane and the back-to-school buzz begins to hum in the air, there’s a sense of anticipation mixed with a tinge of nerves. For many of us, returning after a leave—be it for personal reasons, a sabbatical, or any other break—marks not just the beginning of a new academic year, but a chance for renewal and growth.

In this season of fresh starts and new beginnings, I find myself reflecting on what it means to truly master the return. It’s more than just physically showing up; it’s about stepping back into the rhythm of learning and life with intentionality and a renewed sense of purpose.

Here’s what I’m focusing on as I prepare to re-enter the classroom and embark on this journey of rediscovery:

Embracing Change

Change is inevitable, especially after a break. Whether it’s adapting to new policies, meeting new colleagues, or simply adjusting to a different routine, embracing change with an open mind is key to a successful return.

Setting Clear Goals

Returning presents an opportunity to set clear, achievable goals for the upcoming year. Whether they’re academic, personal, or professional, having goals in mind helps to stay focused and motivated.

Cultivating a Positive Mindset

Maintaining a positive mindset is crucial. Approaching challenges with optimism and resilience sets the tone for a successful and fulfilling school year.

Setup

Here are a few things I am getting ready and printed as I head into the classroom.

Timetable – setting up a schedule that works for my students
New Activities – some new errorless and simple tasks for my new students to transition in seamlessly
Systems – First/Then boards and Token boards all ready to use
Work – Back to School Unit (Literacy & Math), Assessments
Print – name plates, emergency binder, supply binder

Join me on this journey of mastering the return. Together, let’s navigate the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead, embracing each day as a chance to learn, grow, and make a difference.
