How to Crush That First Parent-Teacher Meeting!

I know how stressful this time can be, so I am going to keep this one short & sweet!

There are 5 things you need to remember to crush that parent-teacher meeting/conference:

1. Be confident

You know these learners best! You are their teacher! No matter seasoned teacher, new teacher, or new role, you are doing the best for your students and that’s all that parents want to hear!

2. Be Honest

Some conversations may be harder than others and that’s okay! Whether its behaviour, academics, or social challenges, just be honest about where their child is at. You can re-assure them that you are doing your best to make their learning successful!

3. Prep Talking Points

Write down each student’s name and think of the one thing that comes to mind. What would stand out to you on the progress report you just wrote? What may stand out to parents? Think about their strengths and areas of need as a learner!

4. Give Examples

Provide those specific examples of their child’s achievement. Another thing you may want to add to your talking points! Think of both difficulties and strengths when it comes to the examples. Showcase examples of what they are doing well and where they need improvement!

5. Get Right to it

These conferences are usually on a time limit so get right to talking. An overview can help – print or digital to guide the conversation (see below). Let them know when they can ask questions. I recommend leaving them to the end, so you don’t miss anything you want to say. But be sure to let them know that it’s okay to ask questions and if they have questions what the best way to reach you is, as your time may be cut short.
